The Kirkenes conference 2024 was held the 21st and 22nd of February. As always international relations in the far north is an important part of the agenda.
The conference was opened by Norway´s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre. Among other topics he talked about the changed relations in the high north due to the full stop of Norwegian Russian cooperation, and more focus on Norwegian-Finnish and Norwegian-Swedish contact.
We also invited a panel of international ambasaadors to talk about the changed relations in the Arctic and how to manage the changed geopolitical situation. Mayors of border municipalities and counties was also invited to a discuss changed neighbouring relations with Russia. From a situations of close cooperation across the Euro-Russian border, the border is now closed and relations have been frozen for a long time ahead.
The conference also invited a broad panel of ambassadors to discuss international relations in the Arctic, and possibilities for future cooperation in the north.
